Lately, I have been lucky enough to photograph quite a few newborns and it has reminded me why I love this type of photography so much. There is something incredibly special about those first few days with your newest addition.
I prefer to photograph newborns up to two weeks in age because sessions tend to run smoother during this time. The baby is less likely to be disturbed during sleep, allowing for a wide variety of poses, usually mimicking positions held in utero. Baby acne can start to flare up around 2-3 weeks of age and photographing early alleviates this concern. Plus, it’s the perfect break for moms (and dads) to kick up their feet and rest for a couple hours while we take care of their bundle of joy.
As a parent, I know all too well how quickly children grow. As much as we try to remember how small their hand was when they gripped our finger, the memory fades. One of the benefits of a newborn session is capturing those small details before they vanish. Everything from the wrinkles on the bottom of their feet to the curl of their hair can forever be documented.
This is a great time to capture the connection between mother, father, sibling and baby. I realize that not everyone wants to be incorporated, but the resulting images can serve as powerful memories (not only for the parents but for the child).
I love when parents are up for some skin to skin contact! It’s such a beautiful way to capture the love between a child and parent.
This is often the perfect session to include the parents’ or family’s hobbies, interests or heirlooms. Newborns can sleep in almost any position on any type of surface, allowing us to incorporate a variety of different props. Whether the parents are musicians, painters, teachers or big sports fans, we can integrate their interests into the portraits.

Dad’s guitar made a perfect prop. You may have great props around the house as well!
Have you ever seen lifestyle newborn photography? These images often take place in the family’s home. Although I do not get the chance photograph in clients home often, I have and am willing to do so. If this is something you are interested in, please let me know. Just keep in mind that we will invade your home and ask you to turn up the heat… newborn babies love to stay warm!
With every image we take, we are not only trying to capture something for the family to cherish, but the newborns’ safety is always our first concern. It’s important to realize that the images you may see on the Internet and/or Pinterest of newborns doing almost unthinkable poses are most likely the work of a professional, combining images together to achieve the desired end result. For example the first two images below where combined together to achieve the look of the newborn resting their head on their hands.
Let the team at Portrait Identity capture all the details and love that a baby is sure to bring. Let us share in your joy and allow us to get to know you and your family. These moments are fleeting and should be captured to remember forever!
